How much is enough?
The European Food Safety Authority advises that, in general, women should have a daily fluid intake of about eight glasses of 200 mL and men should have an intake of 10 glasses.
But before you decide on eight or 10 as your magic number, take your lifestyle in consideration. The amount of fluids a person needs depends on a range of factors, including body size, environment, and amount and intensity of physical activity. The more you sweat, the more you need to compensate for water loss. The greater your body mass index, the more liquids you require.
A crucial part of your diet?
How does water play a part in weight loss? Dehydration can cause your metabolism to function below efficiency, making it harder to lose weight.
Also remember that dehydration can be mistaken as hunger. Try reaching for a glass of water. Then check if you’re still hungry 30 minutes later.
For variety, look to other liquid sources. Fruits and vegetables are a vitamin- and fibre-rich part of a balanced diet, and their water composition count toward your daily fluid intake. Other beverages, such as milk and juice, count too.
Extra water for physical activity
To keep energy levels up, make sure you consume water or a sports drink a couple hours before your exercise. Take breaks during long workouts to prevent fatigue and drink up afterward to rehydrate.
Water and sodium lost through heavy sweating can result in muscle cramps or injury, so staying hydrated is essential. Water helps lubricate your joints while a sports drink has electrolytes that help regulate muscle contraction and sodium balance.
Encouragement for children
Children can forget to drink when they’re thirsty or find it too tasteless to enjoy. Adding flavour or lemon juice to water can add taste. Take a water bottle to their playground dates and remind them to take a break. Instilling the habit of hydration can benefit your child’s wellbeing.
Your total wellbeing
Headaches, a lightheaded feeling, lack of energy, dark urine…these are all possible symptoms of dehydration. Along with feeling thirsty, these signs are your body’s way of informing you to up the water consumption – so listen to it!
Water is necessary for your body’s waste disposal, helping you flush out excess substances building up inside you. Getting plenty of fluids isn’t limited to when you’re sick. Make it a priority every day!
